MFR of Mason was founded in 2020 by Cheri McCurley, RN, BSN, MSEd. with the mission of providing individualized Myofascial Release therapy to meet your bodies specific needs. My goal is to help you return to a pain free active lifestyle. I would be honored to take your healing journey to an optimal level.
My first experience with Myofascial Release began years ago when I was battling breast cancer. My treatment included a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, and a total hysterectomy. After the surgeries, I endured painful fascial restrictions due to the multiple areas of scar tissue which left me feeling like I was wearing a strait-jacket. I experienced chronic, painful, generalized tightness in my chest, arms, neck, and pelvis.
During my first chemotherapy treatment, I was fortunate to meet another woman who suggested that I request a prescription for physical therapy from my oncologist and begin therapy as soon as possible. I obtained treatment from multiple therapists with limited success. My symptoms would be decreased briefly, but the treatments did not sustain me with the pain relief that I needed to heal both physically and emotionally. The frustration I felt was sometimes overwhelming. My hopelessness grew as the thought that I would just have to “live with it” seemed to become my new reality.
While attending a cancer support group, I met a woman who had similar issues with pain after her double mastectomy. As we discussed our journeys through breast cancer, she recommended another physical therapist that had a unique approach. The therapist practiced “John Barnes’ Myofascial Release Therapy”. My life was about to change.
At the time, I did not know what Myofascial Release was, but I was eager to give it a try. I was hesitant at first to try another therapist, but I was experiencing pain and discomfort daily. I desperately wanted to stop taking pain medications, so I made an appointment with the new therapist. I began to have decreased pain almost immediately, and eventually I was able to stop taking pain medications. Myofascial Release therapy improved the quality of my life immensely. My pain was reduced dramatically, and I achieved increased mobility throughout my body.
After experiencing first-hand both the physical and mental relief that Myofascial Release provided me, I felt compelled to bring Myofascial Release therapy to people who may be suffering. If you want to discover what Myofascial Release can do for you, I want to help. I take an empathetic approach and bring 24 years of expertise in nursing as well as training in “John Barnes’ Myofascial Release” Seminars MFR I x2, MFR II, MFR Fascial Pelvis and MFR Pediatric to aid in your quest for an improved quality of life.
Fascia is a tough connective tissue which spreads throughout the body in a three-dimensional web from head to foot without interruption. Trauma, posture or inflammation can create a binding down of fascia resulting in excessive pressure on nerves, muscles, blood vessels, osseous structures and/or organs. Since many of the standard tests such as x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc., do not show the fascial restrictions, it is thought that an extremely high percentage of people suffering with pain and/or lack of motion may be having fascial problems, but most go undiagnosed. The viscoelastic quality of the fascial system causes it to resist a suddenly applied force.
The John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach® is considered to be the ultimate therapy that is safe, gentle and consistently effective in producing results that last. Through John's 50 years of experience he has developed an innovative and highly effective whole body approach for the evaluation and treatment of pain and dysfunction.
Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. John Barnes' Myofascial Release Approach®. therapists have been trained to treat a wide variety of patients with myofascial problems in a comprehensive, effective, and caring manner.
Scientific Explanation of Myofascial Release
Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures. The image to the left displays how the fascial restrictions (purple areas) can alter the alignment of the body.
When medicine, surgery, or traditional therapy or massage do not produce the desired results, Myofascial Release may offer an alternative solution. It will safely and gently release the entire Myofascial complex for lasting and comprehensive results and authentic healing.
